There’s a gold medal out there with your name on it. It might not be for the Olympics but there is a race you were born to run and God Himself has shaped you and predestined you to be victorious in this race.
These past few weeks, everyone has been talking about the Olympics, and the news of Caster Semenya’s win of a gold medal over the weekend has been all the talk on news sites and social media.
Let’s be honest, the talented athlete has received her fair share of criticism. But she refused to take her running shoes off and her achievement of the gold medal testifies to more than just her superior running ability. The gold medal speaks about a woman who refused to give up – despite her critics and nay-sayers.
You might have watched the movie Soul Surfer. It’s about a surfer called Bethany Hamilton who, despite a shark attack which cost her one of her arms (and almost her life), refused to give up. The movie has a compelling cover, of a girl standing with one arm holding a surfboard with a huge bite-shaped chunk taken out of it – clearly from a shark who didn’t mean any good.
Hamilton overcame her fears and the doubts of the crowds to get back onto her surf board after the shark attack to pursue her dreams. She knew what she was born to do and no shark was about to convince her to give up on her passion.
A bit like South Africa’s Caster.
Have you got your running shoes on? And if not, why not?
Maybe you have given up on your dreams but take a page out of the book of our golden athlete, and put our running shoes back on. With God’s help you will be victorious in the race He created you to run.
Olympic medallist Eric Liddell, famous athlete from the movie Chariots of Fire said, “I believe God made me for a purpose, but He also made me fast. And when I run I feel His pleasure.”
Christopher McDougall, author of Born to Run: A Hidden tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen said, “If you don’t think you were born to run you’re not only denying history. You’re denying who you are.”
