Cathula Primary School u/15 girls volley ball team won second position at the American International School of Johannesburg (AISJ) 2016 annual volley ball tournament held in AISJ in Midrand on 23 to 24 September 2016.
Cathula girls were competing with schools from other regions and different African and American countries namely, Mozambique, Swaziland, Democratic Republic of Congo and American schools. They were the only school representing Katlehong and Ekurhuleni South region.
In their group they were 16 schools and they won three matches and proceeded to the quarter finals. In the quarter finals they played against American International School of Mozambique and they won 2-0 sets. They qualified for the semi-finals were they against Jeppe High School for Girls and won 2-0.
Cathula proceeded to the finals were they played against Troyeville Primary School based in Johannesburg. Troyeville won 2-1 against Cathula and they were crowned the champions. Cathula won second position and were awarded with a trophy and medals.
Zowi Bongela, a teacher and a volley ball coach at Cathula Primary School said, “The tournament was a learning experience for our team. We were using world class facilities and our players had an opportunity to network with players from other countries. We also learnt different volley ball skills that we will be using next year during schools tournaments.”
