Based on this year’s successful Christmas in July campaign, it may well become an annual campaign, notes the De Freitas Foundation.
The De Freitas Foundation’s Christmas in July campaign has thus far proven to be a great success as once again people showed their selflessness and generosity despite the current tough economic climate.
“The Christmas in July campaign is a campaign where the public were requested to donate personal goods such as toiletries and clothing. These goods are then distributed to those in need, particularly during the cold winter months,” explains Manny de Freitas, Member of Parliament for Johannesburg South and coordinator of the campaign.
“The response to the Christmas in July campaign has been a great success – much greater than we could’ve imagined”, says Jeanette de Freitas of the De Freitas Foundation.
Manny describes that due to the great number of donated goods, more people are able to be helped. “Thanks to the many donations of goods we received – we are able to provide so many more people than originally planned, making their winter better than it would’ve previously been”, says Manny.
As part of the first round of distributions to those in need, two institutions were visited where goods were distributed. “Bienvenu Shelter, which I have had a long association with, was the first place we went to,” notes Manny.
Based in Bertrams, Bienvenu Shelter aims to provide for the needs of migrants by offering them accommodation, meals, clothes, access to health facilities, legal assistance, guidance, and support as well as other needs as and when they arise.
The management and residents of this women’s shelter were most welcoming and grateful for the gifts they received, adds Manny.
“We also visited Casa Ebenezer which is an old age home based in Linmeyer,” says Jeanette. She adds that it was most heart-warming to visit senior citizens for an afternoon. The residents of Casa Ebeneza were happy with the gifts and the company.
