Life According to Heather

I must say, I’m a little sad to see July go. I was beginning to really enjoy the Christmas in July events. The Bedfordview tame TIMES team has been invited to three in recent weeks (see page 4).
Who doesn’t enjoy sipping hot chocolate with marshmallows in the company of smiling people, with fairy lights and tinsel glittering in the background?
At a recent Prima Toys Christmas in July party, I found myself so inspired by the winter wonderland around me (made possible by a snow machine in a corner of the toy showroom area), that I couldn’t help but wonder why we have limited celebrations of this nature to December. Surely joy and goodwill should colour every month? Christmas in August, Christmas in September, and so forth…

Here’s a list of ways we can keep Christmas alive throughout the year:

Give presents. Surprise the ones you love regularly with gestures of goodwill. These don’t have to cost money. A handwritten note or a bunch of flowers from the garden communicate love and appreciation.
Give presence. Christmas isn’t just about presents but about ‘presence’. It’s a time when the whole family gets together. Why wait until Christmas to catch up with all the great aunts and cousins? Make family gatherings a regular feature on your diary.
Uplift others. As a news team, we are inundated with photos of gift and charity hand-overs at Christmas time but why limit charity drives to the festive season? The less fortunate and people in need of encouragement need your support today, as much as at Christmas time.
Try your hand at something new. At Christmas time, we willingly try that new recipe or project, or go for that outdoor adventure. Keep this ‘Carpe Diem’ spirit alive throughout the year and seize the day!
Believe. There’s something about Christmas time that ignites our faith and makes us believe that anything is possible. I’m convinced I’m not the only adult who gets excited about the idea of Christmas morning, sitting beside the Christmas tree and opening presents. Imagine how different life might look if we kept this child-like wonder alive the entire year?
Remember the reason for the season. Christmas perfectly reflects the heart of our Saviour. At Christmas time, this true love is magnified in the hearts of the community. We can see it, feel it and hear it. Keep Him in your heart all year long.

With this in mind, here’s to Christmas in August!
