A 35-year-old man allegedly stabbed his girlfriend to death, after which he attempted suicide by setting himself alight on Wednesday 30 March at the Alberton Informal Settlement.
The man had sustained up to 80% burns from the flammable substance he used. He then handed himself over to Alberton Police. Upon arrival at the man’s place of residence, police found the woman’s body with multiple stab wounds, which appeared to be from a sharp object. The victim was declared dead by paramedics on the scene. The suspect indicated that the deceased was cheating on him. He has since been hospitalised under police guard and will appear in court as soon as his condition has improved, said Sgt Styles Maome.
“Between 04:00 and 05:30, the accused allegedly first strangled the victim before stabbing her in front of their child. When realising that the fatal wound had killed her, he then poured paraffin all over his body and set himself alight, in an attempt to commit suicide.
He then ran to the Alberton Police Station to turn himself in,” according a gentleman at the informal settlement who wished to remain anonymous.
