New ambulances hailed

The Democratic Alliance (DA) welcomes the purchase of 36 new ambulances for the City of Ekurhuleni following increasing pressure from Clr Khetha Shandu in council, this is according to the DA Shadow MMC for Community Safety, Clr Dean Stone.
Stone made his comments following launch of the 36 new ambulance on Saturday 26 August in Boksburg by Executive Mayor of Ekurhuleni, Clr Mzwandile Masina.
Stone said “I believe this intervention comes as a result of questions asked by Clr Khetha Shandu in Council where he emphasised that the city was in contravention of the norms and standards of at least one ambulance per 10 000 residents.”
However, while Stone believes that the purchasing of ambulances is a step in the right direction, he says the City of Ekurhuleni still has a long way to go to ensure sufficient and effective emergency response to the community.
He explains, “The 36 new ambulances, combined with the 40 old ones currently in service, is still 200 vehicles short of what the city actually requires to provide a decent service to the citizens of Ekurhuleni.”
The Metro’s purchase of the ambulances highlights the desperate need for emergency services, as the supply of ambulances is a competency of Provincial Government whose support is no longer reliable.
Stone emphasised, “I, however, will continue to probe and pressurise Provincial Government to ensure they provide the expected grant to obtain the additional ambulances needed to service the emergency needs of the Metro.
“The DA vows to leave no stone unturned in the plight to ensure that each and every citizen of Ekurhuleni has satisfactory access to emergency services and that the city has adequate resources to ensure these needs are met.”
