New day hospital opens in Boksburg

Advanced Health Group has announced the opening of their day hospital in Boksburg, set to open its doors for business later in February at its newly built premises in Eveleigh on Olivia Road.

Advanced East Rand, the day hospital group eleventh establishment in South Africa, will serve the community of Boksburg as well as the greater Ekurhuleni Aerotropolis where there is a need for accessible quality healthcare options.

Dr Vic Diab, founder of the project and general practitioner in the area explains, the last hospital to be built in Boksburg was Sunward Park Hospital in 1990. The population has since grown exponentially, as has the need for a new quality healthcare offering in the area. Two founding members through their long-standing relationship with Carl Grillenberger, CEO of Advanced Health, started investigating the viability of a day hospital in the area and the result, two years later, is the opening of Advanced East Rand.

Day hospitals, as the name suggests, are used solely for surgical procedures which do not require overnight hospital stays. Because of this, operating costs are reduced, and this saving translates into lower costs for the patient. The opening of Advanced East Rand means that residents now have the option to access more efficient and affordable surgeries for same-day surgical procedures, without compromising on quality.

“We want to make a difference to the community by affording patients the choice to access specialist healthcare services and affordable alternatives”, says Liezl Balfour, facility manager at Advanced East Rand.

The new facility offers numerous day procedures, including orthopaedic, cosmetic, gynaecology, urology services, maxillo-facial, dental, and ear nose and throat surgery, as well as the necessary anaesthetist and general practitioners support.

The specialists, who have the option of on-site consulting rooms to attend to patients have access to three fully fitted spacious theatres and a procedure room for local sedation cases.  Thirty beds complete this hospital which includes a dedicated children ward and on-site services for pathology, radiology, audiology and dentistry.

“It is not bricks and mortar that constitute a hospital, but the friendly and compassionate specialists, doctors and nurses who provide medical care within its walls”, says dr Diab.

Balfour echoes this sentiment. “We pride ourselves on efficient, approachable admission staff who are trained to assist patients with pre-authorisation for their surgical procedures. Having staff who provide optimal medical care and treat patients with dignity and decorum is fundamental to our culture and service”, she says.

One of Advanced Health objectives is to curb the high private health costs in South Africa, and this new facility will charge negotiated medical aid tariffs, which are far lower than those charged at acute hospitals.

Globally, the day hospital concept is successful and as technological and surgical techniques become more advanced and the mindsets of consumers begin to shift in South Africa, these facilities are becoming increasingly popular.

In a world where superbugs are becoming more of a lethal reality, another significant benefit to attending day hospitals is reduced exposure to hospital related infections. Thanks to the nature of our hospital model, patients who are booked into Advanced East Rand are released the same day as their surgical procedures, after being examined. This significantly reduces the risk of hospital-related infections spreading in the first place, as well as patient exposure to the potential threat, Balfour adds.

Advanced East Rand is easily accessible, within walking distance of surrounding residential complexes and The Square Shopping Centre and near East Rand Mall. Management encourages members of the community to pop in, view the facilities and learn more about procedures available at the day hospital. Please phone 010 534 6321 or visit for more information.
