Pollen Ndlanya Ekurhuleni Schools Tournament is in progress and the finals will be held on 30 September to 1 October 2016 at Daveyton Stadium.
The two day tournament is for both netball and soccer for u/11 and u/17. Ekurhuleni three regions which consist of Ekurhuleni South, North and Gauteng East Primary and Secondary Schools are participating on the tournament. Only six netball teams and six football teams for both u/11 and u/17 have to qualify for the finals.
The tournament is spearheaded by the former Bafana Bafana player Pollen Ndlanya under his foundation called Pollen Ndlanya Foundation. Ndlanya said it is for the first time hosting schools tournament. He said they have partnered with Ekurhuleni Department of Sports, Arts and Recreation and local business people.
“We want to revive schools netball and football. We will be inviting scoter to search for new talents. We will be exposing local talent,” said Ndlanya.
He added, “I am intending to host this tournament annually. It is a way of ploughing back to the community of Ekurhuleni where l come from. The winners will be awarded R10 000 and there will be a lot of prizes to be won such as soccer and netball jerseys and sporting equipments,” concluded Ndlanya.
Themba Dube, a teacher at Fumana Secondary School and a member of local organising committee for the tournament said, “We are very excited that the tournament is happening. The schools are going to benefit in terms of the sporting equipments and jerseys. Our players will also going to get exposure to potential sponsors and big teams.”
