On Monday morning, 29 January, three illegal miners, also known as ‘Zama Zamas’ were killed during a shootout with the EMPD and fifteen were arrested in an open veld near Main Reef Road, in Angelo informal settlement, Boksburg.
EMPD Swat and EMPD Tracing Unit members acted on information received from reliable sources who reported that there were suspects armed with rifles walking around during early hours of the morning everyday in the bushes near Angelo Informal settlement.
The EMPD Swat and EMPD Tracing Unit members placed the area under surveillance.
Around 5am this morning, (29 January), four men were spotted brandishing rifles fitted with telescopes.
EMPD Spokesperson Wilfred M. Kgasago reported that the illegal miners noticed the presences of the EMPD officers and allegedly started shooting at them.
EMPD officers returned the fire shots and three suspects were killed.
“We suspected that the men who were armed with the rifles are those that were protecting the disused mine shaft where illegal mining was taking place”, said  Kgasago.
Four rifles and a 9mm pistol were recovered during the shootout.
Fifteen suspects were all arrested.
The scene was handed over to the Boksburg SAPS for investigation to take place.
The suspects are expected to appear in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court soon.
