Comforting cottage pie: A heart-warming winter meal for the family

It’s time to start making comfort food again that warm’s you up from the inside and makes you extra happy. Comfort foods have two things in common, carbs and meat. The ratios can change but it’s all about how you put them together. Our comforting cottage pie is a celebration of great home cooking for the whole family. With great mashed potatoes and beef comes great flavour and wholesomeness.

For the mashed potatoes, peel and boil them for about 20 minutes until a knife goes in and comes out without any resistance. If you have a potato ricer, this is the best way to make the smoothest mashed potatoes. However, if you want to go for a more rustic flavour, you can keep the skins on. The meaty beef and vegetable filling is wholesome and always a winner. Before baking, score the mash on top with a fork to create edges that will become nice and crispy in the oven.

Looking for that wholesome family meal that makes you happy during winter? A comforting cottage pie is filled with the fluffiest mash and meatiest filling.

  • 500 g minced beef
  • olive oil
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, crushed
  • 1 tsp fresh ginger, grated
  • 2 tbsp fresh coriander
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 3 cardamom pods, ground
  • 2 tbsp curry powder
  • ¼ cup Mrs Balls chutney
  •  cup chopped dried fruit
  • ½ cup red wine (Cabernet Sauvignon or Pinotage)
  • ½ cup water
  • salt and ground black pepper to taste

  • 6 large potatoes, cooked and mashed
  • generous knob of butter
  • ½ cup milk (increase if mashed potato consistency is too thick)
  • salt and pepper to taste

  • Preheat the oven to 200°C.
  • Heat oil in a skillet and brown the minced beef. Remove and set aside.
  • Add more oil and sauté the onions until glossy.
  • Add the garlic, ginger, coriander, cumin, cardamom and curry powder and fry for another minute.
  • Return the meat to the skillet and add the remaining ingredients. Allow to simmer gently for 30 minutes or until the sauce reduces and the meat is tender.
  • While the meat is simmering, prepare the mashed potatoes. Peel the boiled potatoes, and use a potato masher to mash the potatoes. Add a generous knob of butter and milk and continue mashing until the mashed potatoes are the desired consistency. Remember to add salt and pepper to taste.
  • When the meat is ready, spoon it into an oven dish spreading the meat even in the dish.
  • Spoon the mashed potato on top of the meat and spread it evenly.
  • Bake for 30 minutes in the oven or until golden.
